The archaeological site of
Merida, where the
Roman Theater and
Amphitheater is located, is one of the major archaeological sites in Spain, declared a
World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993.
Be enchanted by the majesty of the Roman theater and amphitheater of Merida on a guided tour accompanied by an expert guide. You will see one of the most representative monuments of the city and discover its history, anecdotes and curiosities.
You will meet the guide at the entrance of the monumental complex to start the tour, which will begin exploring the Roman Theatre, will walk up the steps and contemplate the grandeur of an ancient construction.
You will learn the difference between theater and amphitheater, while the guide will lead you to the amphitheater, ancient enclosure shows gladiatorial opened in year 8 B.C., with whom formed the large public area shows the old Emerita Augusta.
The amphitheater was the setting not only for gladiatorial games, but for other popular shows like hunts wild animals and the struggle between wild animals in artificial scenarios recreating forests, jungles or deserts lagoons.

The amphitheater was abandoned in IV B. C. and until the early twentieth century remained partially buried.
After its restoration, from 1933 to the present, it is the grand stage of the long history of the International Festival of Classic Theater of Merida, which undoubtedly is a luxury to enjoy a theatrical performance at a summer night in the same place where already more than two thousand years ago.
