Avignon: medieval heritage and journeys through Provence
Avignon brings together papal history, medieval ramparts and the River Rhône in one of Provence’s most distinctive cities. Its historic centre lends itself to exploring old streets and squares alongside the monuments that define the skyline.
What to see in Avignon
The Palais des Papes stands beside Notre-Dame des Doms Cathedral, while the surviving arches of the Saint-Bénézet Bridge extend into the Rhône. The Papal Palace, episcopal buildings and bridge form the historic centre inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
When comparing Avignon tours or longer itineraries, check whether the programme includes admission to monuments or a walk through the historic centre. A stop in the city does not automatically include entry to the palace or bridge.
Including Avignon in a Provence itinerary
Avignon can feature on a multi-day journey through southern France alongside places such as Arles, Nîmes or Aix-en-Provence. Routes, hotels and time spent in each destination differ: visiting Avignon does not necessarily mean staying overnight in the city.
